Pokemon Go: A Glimpse into Future Technologies

Hello Readers,

Its mid 2016, and Pokemon Go, an awesome gaming app from Nintendo Co. has taken the world by surprise. It is ranking no 1 on both iOS and Android App Stores, in terms of weekly downloads, and also average time spent on the app. It has surpassed the biggest mobile platforms and social networks in the world. People are spending more time on Pokemon Go than on Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and flipping Facebook.

Well,

Pokemon Go allows Players to capture superimposed Monsters on real life objects and places (Augmented Reality), which can be anywhere on streets, in the park, at the library, your local bar, even in your own backyard (Geo Location).

But, you can’t see them, unless you have a smart phone and a particular pocket monster hunting app, The Pokemon Go.

Pokémon Go’s augmented reality overlays a picture of a Pikachu on the view through the user’s smartphone camera. Augmented reality has been used in glasses and other visual aids, but Pokémon Go is arguably the first widely accessible and free version of the technology. Anyone with a smartphone has access to the game.

Pokemon GO Technologies: Augmented Reality and Geo location

Geo location (GL): This is the process or technique of identifying the geographical location of a person or device by means of digital information. Geo location works by using GPS signals and in some cases cell phone towers and wifi hotspots to identify the position of a person and then uses mapping technology to place the person in a relative spot.

Augmented Reality (AR): Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the user’s environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and overlays new information on top of it.’ In simple words AR means superimposing virtual items (e.g. Pokemons) on physical ones (e.g. your living room couch).

What Possibilities Pokemon Go shows us into the future:

Pokemon Go definitely shows a Glimpse into potential of future emerging technologies and how these technologies are going to change or touch upon the lives of human beings. These are going to transform industries, markets and and yes world economies, in more ways than we can imagine. Bringing Geo location and Augmented Reality together is going to be powerful.

Here are some of the possibilities:

  1. Buying retail goods: What if you could try virtual Clothes and see what it looks like on you before you actually bought it online?
  2. Media companies: What if movies, while being viewed could actually add personalised for you in real time? Imaging your house, farm or backyard being blended with in movie content in real time.
  3. Construction: What if Architects and designers and even customers can view the entire building in virtual reality and have it customised for the customer.
  4. Health: Augmented Reality Games like Pokemon Go, Personalised fitness Augmented Devices can make people exercise, helping with depression and mental health.

And the Possibilities are endless.

We are just starting to scratch the surface and see the next World of technological advancements which will be delivered by technologies like – The internet of things (IoT) adding billions of sensors, fifth generation (5G) wireless networks, Artificial Reality and Augmented Reality.

However, when the world relies on AR, IoT, and 5G networks for more than a game, there are serious implications if there is latency or networks go offline completely. It’s one thing when Pokémon Go freezes in the middle of catching another monster, but it’s another issue entirely when computers freeze or even lag in a world where robots perform surgery.

There will be concerns about security and privacy, which will raises serious questions about what privacy protections will be in place for various connected systems.

“The internet of things will be useless unless it is an internet of secure things.”

Pokémon Go may be a fad, but the technology behind it is not: augmented reality is coming, IoT is coming, and 5G networks are almost here.
